A longshot in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a kill you land from far enough away. Every weapon class has its own distance. Beat that distance with the killing shot and the kill counts toward the Longshot Special Camo challenge. Here are the numbers players have tested since launch: shotguns need 12 meters, pistols 20 meters, SMGs 30 meters, assault rifles, LMGs and marksman rifles 38 meters, and sniper rifles 51 meters. Infinity Ward has not published official distances, so treat these as player-tested figures, not patch notes. They match what the community keeps reporting, kill after kill.

That one table answers most of the search. The rest of this page covers the part everyone argues about: whether you can get longshots on Shipment, which maps actually give you 38 meters of clean air, and which guns make the grind painless instead of miserable.

Quick facts

  • Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4), developed by Infinity Ward, launched 23 October 2026.
  • What a longshot is: a kill past your weapon class's distance threshold, counted for the Longshot Special Camo challenge.
  • Distances: 12m shotguns, 20m pistols, 30m SMGs, 38m ARs, LMGs and marksman rifles, 51m snipers.
  • Not required: no headshot, no mounted weapon, no special attachment. Distance on the killing shot is the only condition.
  • Best mode: Ground War, because the maps are big enough for real sightlines.
  • Worst map for it: Shipment. It is tiny. Keep it for Point Blank kills instead.

MW4 longshot distance for every weapon class

The full breakdown lives in our MW4 longshot distance guide for every weapon class, but the short version fits in one table:

Weapon classLongshot distanceHow it feels
Shotguns12 metersEasy once you run slugs
Pistols20 metersDoable on medium lanes
SMGs30 metersThe sweet spot for grinding
Assault rifles38 metersNeeds a proper lane
LMGs38 metersSame distance, slower gun
Marksman rifles38 metersComfortable at this range
Sniper rifles51 metersNeeds the longest sightlines in the game

Two things catch people out. First, the distance is per class, not per gun, so your favourite AR build still needs the full 38 meters. Second, attachments do not move the number. A rangefinder optic helps you judge the shot, but the threshold stays the same.

Can you get longshots on Shipment?

Short answer: barely, and only with the short-distance classes. Shipment is the smallest map in MW4, and most of its fights happen inside 15 meters. A shotgun at 12 meters can score longshots down its longest lanes, and an SMG at 30 meters can just about do it corner to corner on a good angle. An assault rifle needs 38 meters, which the map basically does not have, and a sniper needs 51 meters, which it definitely does not have. If you are queuing Shipment 24/7 hoping the AR longshots will tick up while you grind everything else, they will not. We broke the whole thing down lane by lane in the Shipment longshots post linked above.

Shipment is not wasted time, though. It is the best Point Blank map in the game, and Point Blank is another Special Camo condition sitting in the same challenge list. Play Shipment for the close-range stuff and take your longshots somewhere with actual distance.

Best maps and sightlines for longshots

You need long, busy lanes. Five maps keep coming up in testing, and our best maps and modes for longshots post covers each sightline in detail:

  • Coal — the largest map in MW4. Shoot down the train tracks or across the center lanes.
  • Transit 213 — hold the lane behind the C flag doorway in Domination.
  • Reactor U92 — work along the train tracks through the middle of the map.
  • Silkworm — main street gives you a long, straight, busy lane.
  • Rooftops — the scaffolding side opens up shots across the roof.

Best modes for the longshot grind

Ground War is the default answer. Big maps, long sightlines, and enough players that a good lane never stays empty for long. Hardpoint and Domination work too, for a different reason: objectives pull enemies along predictable routes, so you can hold one lane and let the rotation come to you. Small-map playlists and Shipment 24/7 are where longshot progress goes to die.

Best weapons and loadout tips

Start where the distance is cheap. The ISO Nightshade and the VEL 46 are the two SMGs players keep recommending: fast, easy to control, and they only need a 30 meter kill. For assault rifles the M4 is the sensible starting point. A 3x or 4x optic helps on the long lanes, because at 38 meters you are picking out a moving target, not spraying a doorway. In Ground War, a Tactical Insertion earns its slot — drop it near your lane and you are back in position seconds after you die, instead of running half the map again.

Longshot vs Point Blank

These two challenges are opposites. A longshot is a kill past your class distance, 12 to 51 meters depending on the gun. Point Blank is the reverse: a kill at roughly 2 meters, close enough to touch. Players mix them up because both names sit in the same Special Camo list and neither one is explained in the game. If a kill did not count and you were sure of the shot, check which of the two you were actually grinding. Most "my longshot did not count" reports turn out to be a distance that fell a few meters short.

How longshots fit the camo grind

Every weapon in MW4 has 8 Military camos and 3 Special camos to earn before Gold opens up. The Special conditions include Longshot, Point Blank, Mounted, Akimbo, Focused, From Behind and Hipfire kills. Longshot is the one that forces you out of your comfort maps, which is why it generates so many searches. Plan for it: do your Hipfire and Point Blank work on Shipment, take Mounted and Longshot to Ground War, and the whole list moves faster.

FAQ

What is a longshot in MW4?
A kill from beyond your weapon class's distance threshold — 12m for shotguns up to 51m for snipers — that counts toward the Longshot Special Camo challenge.

Can you get longshots on Shipment?
With shotguns and, on the longest angles, SMGs. AR and sniper longshots effectively do not fit on the map. Use Shipment for Point Blank kills instead.

Do I need a headshot for a longshot?
No. No headshot, no mount, no specific attachment. Only the distance of the killing shot matters.

Are the distances official?
No. Infinity Ward has not published them. The figures on this page are player-tested and widely reported, and a future patch could shift them.

Is there a longshots app or download?
No. A longshot is something you do inside MW4, not something you install. Our download page explains what to watch out for, including the fake hack and APK sites riding this search.

That is the whole picture: know your class distance, pick a map that actually has it, and stop expecting Shipment to do a Ground War job. The grind is much shorter once the map matches the number.
