Best Maps and Modes for Longshots in MW4
Longshots are a map problem before they are an aim problem. If the map does not have a 38 meter lane, your assault rifle is not getting longshots on it, no matter how well you shoot. This guide covers the modes and maps that actually give you the distance, the sightlines players keep coming back to, and the loadout choices that make each class faster.
Start with the mode: Ground War first
Ground War is the default longshot mode in MW4, and it is not close. The maps are built at a bigger scale, sightlines run long, and the player count keeps busy lanes busy. Whatever class you are grinding — SMG at 30 meters, AR at 38, sniper at 51 — Ground War gives you the room. If you only change one thing about your grind, change the playlist.
Hardpoint and Domination are the strong second option. Objective modes pull enemies along predictable rotations, which is worth a lot when you need one specific kind of kill. Pick a lane that watches an approach to the objective, hold it, and let the rotation bring targets to you at the range you need. This is steadier than chasing gunfights around a big map, and it is the method we recommend for the 38 meter classes in particular.
What to avoid: small-map playlists and Shipment 24/7. Those are close-range grinders. As we covered in the Shipment longshots post, Shipment can just about produce shotgun and SMG longshots and nothing beyond that. Spend your Shipment hours on Point Blank instead.
The five maps that keep producing longshots
Coal. The largest map in MW4, and the safest recommendation on this page. The train tracks give you long, straight lanes, and the center of the map opens into sightlines that clear even the sniper's 51 meters. If a class is stuck, take it to Coal first.
Transit 213. In Domination, hold the lane behind the C flag doorway. Enemies push through that doorway on rotation all match, at a distance that suits ARs and marksman rifles nicely. It is one of the most repeatable longshot spots found since launch.
Reactor U92. Work along the train tracks through the middle of the map. The tracks create natural long angles with regular traffic, and you can play them from either side as the match flows.
Silkworm. Main street is the play here: a long, straight lane where you can set up behind cover and take targets at proper distance. Good for SMGs learning their 30 meter line as well as the 38 meter classes.
Rooftops. The scaffolding side of the map opens shots across the roof. It takes a match or two to learn the angles, and after that it produces steady longshots for patient players.
Loadout choices that actually help
Pick guns that stay accurate at your class distance. For SMGs, the ISO Nightshade and the VEL 46 are the community's default picks — fast, controllable, and they only need 30 meters. For assault rifles, start with the M4. A 3x or 4x optic earns its place on the long lanes: at 38 meters and beyond, target size is the problem, not damage. In Ground War, run a Tactical Insertion. The best longshot lanes are contested, you will die holding one, and the Insertion puts you straight back instead of sending you on a long run from spawn. The full distance table for every class is in our MW4 longshot distance guide if you need the numbers while you build a class.
Order of attack: cheapest classes first
Grind smart and the whole challenge list feels shorter. Start with shotgun longshots at 12 meters — they fall almost anywhere, even on Shipment. Move to SMGs and pistols at 30 and 20 meters on medium and large maps. Then do the 38 meter block: assault rifles, LMGs and marksman rifles, in Ground War and objective modes. Leave sniper longshots at 51 meters for last, on Coal and the biggest Ground War sightlines, once you know the lanes by heart. Every class's kills also feed the wider camo structure — 8 Military camos and 3 Special camos per weapon before Gold — and the homepage overview of how longshots fit the camo grind ties it together.
That is the recipe: Ground War, a real lane, a gun that behaves at distance, and the patience to let targets come to you. The players stuck on this challenge are almost never stuck on skill. They are stuck on a map that cannot give them the meters.
